Hatteras Island Opening To Non-residents

Non-resident property owners will be allowed back onto Hatteras Island for the first time since Hurricane Irene separated the land from the mainland of the Outer Banks.

Those wanting to get back on the island can do so beginning at 6 a.m. Saturday at the NC DOT ferry dock at Stumpy Point on the Dare County Mainland.

The storm cut new channels in Highway 12, making Hatteras Island villages accessible only by boat.

Emergency ferries have been running from Stumpy Point to Rodanthe.
