A homeowner is in custody after a house fire early Tuesday that critically injured his roommate.
Craven County Fire Marshal Danny Hill says Ricardo Lopez was airlifted to the burn unit in Chapel Hill after the fire at 1116 Meadows St. in New Bern. The fire was reported just after midnight. Hill says crews found Lopez outside of the house, and he was responsive. He's now listed in critical condition. Two other people escaped the home without injury.
Thomas Lewis, 36, has been arrested on a charge of malicious use of an accelerant. Hill said gasoline had been poured in the house, but the investigation is still going on to determine if the gasoline was poured with the intent to set the house on fire.
Hill says Lewis owns the home, while the victim was his roommate.
