The National Park Service is offering members of the public a rare chance to tour the famous Cape Hatteras Lighthouse lit only by the full moon.
The park service is conducting two tours of the landmark on Friday night. Tickets for the tours must be purchased in advance.
The tour will take flashlight-carrying climbers up the 257 iron steps into the watch room. People will be able to get a glimpse of what lighthouse keepers used to experience, with the powerful beam of light reaching out to sea.
Park service officials say climbers should expect a challenge. The equivalent of a 12-story building, the Hatteras lighthouse is the tallest in the United States and the tallest brick lighthouse in the world. Also, the building has no air conditioning.
