A 78-year-old man Duplin County man, described as a legend in the dog-fighting world, will spend five years behind bars after being sentenced in Raleigh.
Harry Hargrove was given 60 months’ imprisonment,
the statutory maximum, followed by three years supervised release.
Hargrove pleaded guilty to the charges earlier this year, and prosecutors sought a sentence significantly longer than federal guidelines recommend.
The guidelines called for a sentence of 10 months to 16 months.
Thirty-five dogs were found on his property in April 2010 and all 35 were euthanized. A federal motion says Hargrove has been involved in dog-fighting in the South for about 40 years.
