The Department of Transportation is beginning pickup of storm-related debris along state-maintained roads in North Carolina counties most severely impacted by Hurricane Irene.
The pickup begins Thursday in Beaufort, Carteret, Craven, Dare, Hyde, Pamlico and Tyrrell counties.
NCDOT is working with local emergency management officials to determine collection locations and schedules. The public will be notified when the specifics are finalized.
A statement from the department said it is beginning the cleanup in anticipation of a federal disaster declaration for public assistance, which will cover things like the cleanup of highway rights of way. The seven counties where DOT workers will clear storm debris have already received a federal disaster declaration for individual assistance to residents and homeowners.
