Bells rang in a Connecticut town to commemorate the moment one week ago when a gunman began a shooting rampage at an elementary school that killed 20 children and six adults.
Gov. Dannel Malloy and other officials led a moment of silence after the ringing of the bells Friday at Trinity Episcopal Church.
The bell is rang 26 times in memory of each life lost at Sandy Hook Elementary School. The gunman also killed his mother before the massacre, and himself afterward.
No formal remarks were planned Friday morning. Other places throughout the country were planning similar observances.

Governor Bev Perdue declared a day of mourning for the victims of the mass shooting. She's asking North Carolinians to pause for a moment of silence at 9:30 a.m. this morning.
A similar memorial is planned in Connecticut and other states. Connecticut's governor is also asking for all houses of worship to ring bells 26 times during the moment of silence in honor of the 20 students and 6 teachers who were killed.
