The radio tower that was threatening to fall over in Smithfield is no longer a threat.
Part of a popular road in Smithfield is open again after crews took down the leaning tower just off Highway 70 in Johnston County. The radio tower bent during a storm Thursday when one of its three sets of guy wires broke.
Two restaurants and a handful of homes were evacuated, but the danger is now over.
Part of a popular road in Smithfield is shut down because of a leaning tower.
A radio tower just off Highway 70 bent during a storm on Thursday when one of its three sets of guy wires broke. Two restaurants and a handful of homes were evacuated.
Chris Francis lives nearby the tower.
"I've never seen such excitement. Looks like a good gust of wind could bring it down. I hope not though," Francis said.
The road will stay closed until the tower is safely down.
