Juniper Road Wildfire Expected To Grow In Acreage

A wildfire that's been burning in Pender and Onslow counties is expected to grow as crews set fire to 8,000 acres today.

The Juniper Road fire has burned more than 22,600 acres in the two counties. It began June 19th from a lightning strike.

State foresters say they plan to burn over 8,000 acres off of Lodge Road as part of a controlled burn to remove fuel in the southeast corner of the fire.

The fire is 30% contained and crews say the rain is helping to extinguish the fire.

Onslow and Duplin counties have code red air quality alerts today. Code Orange alerts are posted for Carteret, Craven, Dare, Jones and Pamlico counties.
