Hatteras Disaster Recovery Center Open 3 More Days

The disaster recovery center in Buxton on Hatteras Island is staying open three extra days because of demand from people who suffered property damage or other problems caused by Hurricane Irene.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency said in a news release Tuesday that the center now will close at 7 p.m. Friday. It had been scheduled to close Tuesday. The center is located at The Fessenden Center in Buxton.

FEMA officials are at the center to explain assistance programs and help residents apply for aid. Also at the center are representatives of the state Division of Emergency Management and other agencies.

Hurricane Irene made landfall August 27th near Cape Lookout. Governor Beverly Perdue has said the storm caused more than $400 million in damage in the state.
