Greene Co. Middle School To Be Demolished

Saturday marks three months since the deadly tornadoes devastated North Carolina. Greene County Middle School was severely damaged, and is preparing to go under construction.

Greene County Schools Superintendent Dr. Patrick Miller says crews plan to demolish the building. They plan on knocking down all the walls, keeping the foundation and about 80% of the structural steel in place. The goal is to have the overhauled building ready for class by December 2012.

The modular campus students will attend until then should be done in a few weeks, in time for the first day of school on August 25.

Previous Story:

Officials have decided to repair Greene County Middle School after it was destroyed in the April 16th tornado outbreak.

Insurance adjusters and engineers have determined it will be faster to repair rather than rebuild, according to the Daily Reflector. Insurance will cover the $12 million price tag for all necessary repairs to the school, along with the cost of mobile classrooms.

Greene County's superintendent hopes to have the repaired middle school open during fall of 2012.

The school closed following the devastating storm, forcing students to attend Greene Central High School on a split schedule.
