The action sports world lost one of its bright young stars Thursday when Canadian freestyle skier Sarah Burke died from injuries suffered Jan. 10 in Park City, UT.
The six-time Winter X Games champion crashed while training for a personal sponsor event at the Park City Mountain Resort. Doctors say she suffered irreversible damage due to lack of oxygen and blood after cardiac arrest.
Coincidentally, she crashed on the same halfpipe where snowboarder Kevin Pearce suffered a traumatic brain injury while training in late December 2009.
Burke was more than just a great skier though, she was an advocate for her sport. In April 2011, she successfully petitioned the International Olympic Committee to add freestyle skiing to the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia, where she most likely would have been the gold-medal favorite.
Sarah Burke was 29.
