Carteret County Raccoon Tests Positive For Rabies

Carteret County Animal Control has reported its first case of animal rabies for 2012 in the county after an aggressive raccoon was picked up after an incident Friday.

The incident occurred when a Morehead City resident contacted animal control and indicated that a raccoon had killed one of their chickens.

Two family dogs were also bitten while chasing after the raccoon, according the Carteret County Health Department’s Animal Control division.

When animal control staff arrived at the home, they found the injured raccoon still in the yard. The animal was put down and its remains were sent to the N.C. State Laboratory for Public Health for rabies testing.

The last known rabies cases in the county were in October when a fox bit dogs and two people in Cedar Point. Two weeks later in the same area, several dogs were placed in six-month quarantine after an aggressive raccoon attack.
