FedEx expects to handle more than 17 million packages today, December 12th, on what the company expects to be its busiest day of the year.
That's 9-percent more than last year's busiest day, and more than double what FedEx ships on a normal day.
The number of shipments handled on the busiest day has climbed steadily through the recession as holiday shoppers buy online and have their gifts shipped.
Here are a few tips from the experts themselves on sending a holiday package.
First things first, the box you're shipping your item in, if you can start with a brand new box. UPS packaging engineers say reusing packaging poses risks; there's a chance the outer container has started to break down, losing some of its strength.
Experts also say that Styrofoam peanuts may be a thing of the past. They recommend using shredded cardboard or craft paper, They both better protect your item and they decompose faster. Bubble wrap is still okay to use, but be aware that even slightly heavy items can pop the protective bubbles.
And a final note on shipping alcohol, specifically wine. It gets tricky as each state has their own restrictions on things like wine. As for North Carolina, wineries who obtain a shipping permit can ship up to two cases of wine per month to a North Carolina resident. Residents cannot actually send wine themselves.
Experts say the best thing to do is to have a winery send it for you.
