Veterans Day is this Sunday, and in honor of all those who fought for the nation's freedom, several events will take place over the next few days.
Jacksonville will dedicate its new Freedom Fountain on Friday, not far from the Beirut Memorial, the 9-11 Memorial and the Vietnam Memorial. The dedication is scheduled for 9 a.m. Friday at the intersection of Johnson Boulevard and New Bridge Street in Jacksonville.
On the campus of East Carolina University Friday, the Office of Military Programs will host a ceremony to dedicate 17 new engraved pavers to the Memorial Walk, a campus site that honors the military service of ecu faculty, staff and students. That ceremony is at 2 p.m. Friday.
The Craven County Veterans Council is sponsoring a Veterans' Day Luncheon on Friday at the New Bern National Guard Armory. The address is 317 Glenburnie Drive. Doors open at 10:30 a.m., and the program starts at 11:30 a.m. The Southern Gentlemen Barber Shop Quartet will provide music, while Moore's Barbecue of New Bern will provide the catering. The Craven County Sheriff's Office's Color Guard will present the colors. Veterans and their caregivers are invited.
Veterans Day celebrations continue in Kinston Friday. The Walk of Honor brick dedication takes place at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Tiffany West Park on Herritage St. A flag retirement ceremony follows at 3:30 p.m.
The public is invited to attend the Tar River Community Band Veterans Concert and Reception at 7 p.m. Friday at the Lenoir Community Council for the Arts.
A parade down Herritage St. in Kinston is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday. Later that evening, at 7 p.m. the Salute! Veterans Tribute Show will take place at the Grainger-Hill Performing Arts Center. The public is invited to attend.
