Crews Working To Repair Wilmington Sewage Main

Work crews in New Hanover County are still trying to repair a broken main that spilled more than a million gallons of untreated sewage into Barnards Creek Tuesday.

The StarNews of Wilmington reports that Director Jim Gregson of the N.C. Division of Water Quality's Wilmington office said that based upon the average flow in the line and the amount of time it was leaking, up to 1.4 million gallons could have escaped into the creek Tuesday.

The Cape Fear Public Utility Authority says workers suspected a spill had occurred around 1 a.m. Tuesday morning when volumes were low at the Southside Waste Water Treatment Plant. The spill was located at 10 a.m.

Gregson said crews planned to install a temporary line across a bridge over the creek until permanent repairs can be finished.
