NEW INFO: Coast Guard Search Suspended Off Dare County Coast

The Coast Guard has suspended a search for what was thought to be boaters in trouble.

Officials at the Coast Guard Station Hatteras Island say a helicopter from the air station in Elizabeth City started its second search for the source of a red flare about four miles off the coast of Buxton in Dare County. It failed to find anything this morning and the search was discontinued.

The Coast Guard received two reports of the red flare overnight. The first call came in at 8:45 p.m. Sunday. Search efforts overnight were hampered by fog on the water.
