NEW INFO: 12 Year Old Survives Getting Thrown From Car In Jones County

A drive back from the beach ended up being a dangerous trip for one local family.

Thomas Blount, 18, of Washington, lost control of an Oldsmobile Alero on Highway 17 in Jones County, according to the Highway Patrol. Trooper Kirk says Blount says the crash was reported at 8:39 p.m. just one mile north of Maysville, a busy highway.

Trooper Kirk says Blount drove off the road to the right, overcorrected and crashed into a ditch. That crash caused the car flip over three or four times. The 12 year old girl in the backseat was thrown through the glass of the back window of the car. However, Kirk says she was alert and talking at the scene. He described her air transport to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville as a "precaution."

Blount had only minor scrapes, and another passenger in the front seat was being checked out for non-life-threatening injuries.

Kirk says the people in the crash are all related but did not have specifics. He says they were driving from Emerald Isle back to their home in Washington when the crash happened.

Blount has been cited with failing to maintain lane control and a child restraint violation.
