TROOPER: High Speed Chase Began Because Of Texting

State troopers say a high speed chase Sunday evening in Greenville began when they saw the driver texting on his cell phone.

Troopers have charged David Sternberg of Ayden with felony flee to elude arrest, reckless driving to endanger, speeding 100 in a 45 mile per hour zone, simple possession of bath salts, driving while license revoked and texting while driving a motor vehicle.

Trooper Haywood Singleton says he was in an unmarked patrol car when he noticed the driver of a Honda texting at the intersection of Arlington Boulevard and Evans Street. When the light turned green, the trooper says the man continued to text and Singleton turned his blue lights on.

Singleton says at first the man pulled into the Target parking lot like he was going to stop. But he continued driving around the shopping center. The vehicle then got on Greenville Boulevard and the chase continued down Highway 11 and troopers say speeds topped 100 miles per hour.

The vehicle crashed on Laurie Ellis Road in Winterville and troopers arrested Sternberg.

He's being held on a $50,000 bond.
