Firefighters: Damaged Cord Causes Duplex Fire

Updated: Fri 7:28 PM, Jul 20, 2012

Greenville firefighters said it was a miracle residents escaped from a duplex this morning because there were no working smoke alarms in the home when a fire broke out.

Rescue crews got a call at 3:09AM on Friday. Within five minutes, crews were working to extinguish a fire on Tyson Street. Crews said flames were coming from the front room of the duplex. The second floor of the structure had heavy smoke damage, as did the attached unit, though that apartment was unoccupied. Crews said heat from the fire did damage a vehicle parked nearby and melted some siding on a nearby home.

The two adult residents woke up because of the crackling and popping noises from the fire. Crews said there was not a working smoke alarm in the home.

After further investigation, officials determined a damaged electrical cord was the cause of the fire. The Red Cross is providing the couple with temporary shelter and aid.

Previous Story

Crews are still on the scene of a fire that destroyed a house earlier this morning.

Fire crews say they were called to 304 Tyson Street in Greenville around 3:10 this morning. Though crews had the fire under control in six minutes, the fire gutted the two story home.

The two people who live there escaped safely. A family friend says this fire is a bad thing that happened to good people.
