A Bailey man is in a Virginia hospital after he was charged with killing a Nash County man.

Nash County deputies say Trey Emerson is in custody in Norfolk after his arrest.

The 21-year-old is accused of killing Michael Morrisette, Jr.

Sgt. Jim Breedlove tells WITN News that Emerson was an acquaintance of the victim's family. He says on Monday they investigated an assault between Emerson and Morrisette's sister. When they did a followup with her on Tuesday the sister told them she hadn't seen her brother since Monday. That's when they began searching for Morrisette and found him shot and killed in the woods.

Breedlove says they believe Emerson fled to Virginia, where he committed another assault. The sergeant says when fleeing back into North Carolina he crashed his car just over the state line in Currituck County. Emerson was taken to a Virginia hospital where he's in critical condition. Breedlove says the suspect will be served with the murder warrant once he gets back to North Carolina.
