Autism Diagnosis Study

A new study about autism finds 30% of one-year-olds considered at risk for autism received a confirmed diagnosis of the disorder at age three.

Parents of the children in the study filled out a questionnaire that screens for missed developmental milestones. Researchers at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine developed the test. They also found 85% of the children considered at-risk for an autism spectrum disorder had some sort of developmental delay at age three.

Experts say spotting children with developmental delays early gives them months, if not years, to participate in intervention programs before they would typically be diagnosed.
