Jacksonville Teacher Due In Court, Accused Of Giving Booze To Teens

A local teacher is expected in a courtroom, not a classroom Tuesday morning.

Diane Mennig of Jacksonville is scheduled to appear in Onslow County District Court to face charges of charged with giving malt beverages to persons under 21, giving liquor to persons under 21 and overage aiding and abetting an underage person in the possession and consumption of alcoholic beverages.

State agents say the underage drinking at Mennig's Running Road home included about 11 high school students between the ages of 15 to 18 years old. It occurred on November 18-19, December 16-17, and December 31-January 1st. Onslow County Schools say the teens were all students within their system.

A career educator is accused of giving alcohol to teens at her home in Jacksonville.

A North Carolina Alcohol Law Enforcement agent arrested Diane Mennig, a teacher at Morton Elementary, on three warrants Tuesday at the Onslow County jail. She is charged with giving malt beverages to persons under 21, giving liquor to persons under 21 and overage aiding and abetting an underage person in the possession and consumption of alcoholic beverages.

State agents say the underage drinking at Mennig's Running Road home included about 11 high school students between the ages of 15 to 18 years old. It occurred on November 18-19, December 16-17, and December 31-January 1st. Onslow County Schools say the teens were all students within their system.

"We are still working to get a hold of her," said Dr. Barry Collins, Assistant School Superintendent. "We need to find out more about these charges to determine any action with Ms. Mennig. Right now, this remains a personnel issue."

Mennig is an elementary school teacher at Morton Elementary School in Onslow County. The career educator has taught in Onslow County for 15 years, and 10 years in another state, according to the school system.

Court records show in 2008 the woman was convicted for DWI and reckless driving and received probation for both counts.
