Budget Cuts Are Hitting North Carolina Legislative Cafeteria

The budget cutting is getting serious in North Carolina as the recession continues.

Lawmakers have been forced to cut funding for education and
health programs. The News & Observer of Raleigh reported Friday the
cuts will likely hit lawmakers when they head to lunch.

The budget the House will debate next week includes a 10 percent
increase in prices at the cafeteria in the basement of the
legislative building. The cafeteria includes made-from-scratch
items and banana pudding is a favorite.

The main dining area includes lobbyists, staffers, journalists
and state employees from nearby buildings looking for a good meal at a
good price.

The restaurant prices cover the cost of the food, about $925,000
last year. State money pays for the rest, which includes the
payroll.
