PITT COUNTY -- Troopers think a driver might have fallen asleep behind the wheel, leading to a head-on collision.
The crash happened around 3 p.m. Tuesday about five miles south of Greenville on NC 43. Trooper Steven Ziemba says 21-year-old Madison Canady either had a medical condition or fell asleep behind the wheel. Trooper Ziemba says Canady started to veer into traffic and sideswiped one car. The woman driving that vehicle was not hurt.
However, Canady's car continued into oncoming traffic, and hit another vehicle head on. Trooper Ziemba says crews had to cut 35-year-old Marisela Castro Lopez out of her mangled vehicle. She was pinned inside for about 20 minutes. Lopez was taken to Pitt County Memorial Hospital in critical condition. On Wednesday morning, hospital officials listed Lopez in serious condition, which is an improvement.
Canady is charged with reckless driving and driving left of center, according to Trooper Ziemba.
Traffic on NC 43 was blocked in both directions for about an hour while crews cleared the accident scene.
