Woman Faces Charges For Puppy Mill

The woman who handed over nearly 300 dogs to the Humane Society of the United States is facing criminal charges.

Virginia Thornton of Wayne County has been charged with 12 misdemeanor counts of cruelty to animals. Thornton is the owner of kennels that the Humane Society raided early one morning in February.

Thornton gave up custody of the dogs in return for Wayne County authorities dropping civil charges against the dog breeder. The charges Thornton faces now are criminal. Her next court date is June 10.

The Humane Society handled transporting the 283 dogs to humane groups across the region.
