Obese Birth Defects

Women who are obese when they get pregnant may be putting their baby's health at risk.

Researchers from the UK analyzed data from 18 studies that looked at the relationship between a woman's weight and her baby's health.
They found women who were obese at the start of their pregnancy had a slightly increased risk for having babies with spina bifida, heart defects, and cleft lip or palate.

While the risk was small, experts say because of the growing obesity epidemic, more attention needs to be paid to a woman's weight when she is of child bearing age.
