BENSON, N.C. -- Johnston County Sheriff's deputies say a middle-aged man was found dead in a trash bin at an Interstate 40 rest stop near Benson.
The discovery was made at about 6 p.m. Tuesday.
The man was not immediately identified. Authorities took the body to the state Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Chapel Hill for an autopsy.
A supervisor tells WRAL-TV that rest area workers dump trash in the bin after each shift. The bin is not for public use. The supervisor says a worker who took garbage to the bin around 3 p.m. didn't notice anything out of the ordinary.
The State Bureau of Investigation arrived Tuesday night to look for evidence.
