UPDATED: Worker Killed While Working On Oak Island Bridge

A construction worker is dead after a large concrete girder crashed to the ground as crews worked to build a new Oak Island bridge.

The accident was caught on tape. Click video link to view. Please note, the video does show the actual girder falling.

Lee Construction Co. identified the worker Wednesday as Jose Montalvo of Sumter, S.C. The Associated Press reported that Montalvo was on the girder when it fell about 40 feet. He died at the scene. Two other workers were injured in the incident. Lee Construction said one needed surgery and the other had minor injuries.

Oak Island Mayor Johnie Vereen said there will be three separate
investigations of the collapse. Investigators are already working to determine the cause. Construction on the 4.5-mile bridge was was to finish next December.
