The Roanoke Rapids Theatre enters the next phase with its potential buyer, a Chicago businessman. The mandatory period for others to bid against Lafayette Gatling is over.
The Roanoke Rapids City Council approved the sale of the theatre in October for $12.5 million to Gatling. That's about $9 million less than Roanoke Rapids invested in the project.
The theatre used to be called the Randy Parton Theatre. However, the relationship between the city and the brother of country music star Dolly Parton soured in 2007. The venue was not bringing in revenue like anyone hoped. The city eventually banned Parton from performing in his namesake theater because of his behavior.
