Suspect Dies In Police Custody

Police say a man who had been detained by citizens and handcuffed by a police officer after several car break-ins has died.

The Charlotte Observer reported Friday that the man's name wasn't released.

The man died early Friday after he struggled with a car owner who police said saw him in his car. The car owner screamed for help when the suspect began assaulting him with a screwdriver and two city sanitation workers who were nearby came to help and restrained the man while the car owner called police.

Police said the officer cuffed the man, the city employees stepped away and then the officer noticed he wasn't responding. The man died at Carolinas Medical Center.

No one has been charged, but detectives are investigating.
