J.H. Rose High School in Greenville made Newsweek's list of top public high schools for the third year in a row.
J.H. Rose High School ranked 682 in the list released Tuesday. in 2007, Rose ranked 491. In 2006, Rose ranked 645.
All of the other schools in Eastern Carolina to make the top high school list are on the Outer Banks.
First Flight High School in Kill Devil Hills ranked 1,131 in the poll. That's an improvement over First Flight's ranking in 2007 at 1,219.
Manteo High School in Manteo ranked 1,315. That ranking is down from 2007, when Manteo ranked 993. In 2006, Manteo ranked 1,102.
Cape Hatteras Secondary in Buxton also made the list in 2008, coming in 1,320. This was the school's first appearance on the list.
Public schools are ranked according to a ratio devised by Jay Mathews. The ratio includes the number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and/or Cambridge tests taken by all students at a school in 2007 divided by the number of graduating seniors.
