One response East Carolina University had to the massacre at Virginia Tech was the establishment of the ECU Alert system. Students, parents, faculty and staff can sign up to get text messages or emails to non-ECU email address about emergencies on campus. All ECU email addresses receive alerts from the system no matter what.
ECU officials say nearly 3,000 students have signed up for the ECU Alert system. That is a small fraction of the 26,000 students enrolled in the university. That number includes graduate and undergraduate students, along with distance learning students. The latest figure available is from the fall semester in 2006.
About 1,000 faculty and staff members have signed up to receive the alerts. There are 6,000 faculty and staff members at ECU, officials say.
Officials say 1,500 parents have signed up to receive alerts.
