Before it opens to four-wheel traffic, the Triangle Expressway is opening to a lot of two-legged traffic.
The N.C. Turnpike Authority has scheduled the Triangle Expressway Trot on Sunday. It's being touted as a 5K run/walk and Family Fun Day. All proceeds from the event will benefit Mothers Against Drunk Driving, the official partner of the race.
Runners and walkers will get to see the newly constructed Triangle Parkway portion of the Triangle Expressway, North Carolina's first modern toll road. It starts near the intersection of Hopson Road and Davis Drive in Research Triangle Park.
The first phase of the Triangle Expressway, known as the Triangle Parkway, is scheduled to open to traffic in December. Tolls will be collected electronically, eliminating the need for toll booths.
