A Wilmington woman has given birth to quintuplets at an Arizona hospital.
Officials with Banner Desert Medical Center in the Phoenix suburb of Mesa say 33-year-old Carmen Milam Matthews delivered the five babies Thursday after a 34-week pregnancy.
The three boys and two girls are receiving care in the neonatal intensive care unit at Cardon Children's Medical Center on the Banner campus.
Their birth weights ranged from 2 pounds 2 ounces to 4 pounds 13 ounces.
At a news conference Friday, the 33-year-old Matthews said she had always wanted five children but not necessarily at the same time.
The Arizona Republic says Matthews and her husband, Mike, are from Wilmington, N.C.
The couple says they came to Mesa so perinatologist Dr. John Elliott could assist in the deliveries.
