A Wake County sheriff's deputy and a suspect in a domestic disturbance call have been wounded in an apparent shootout.

Sheriff's office spokeswoman Phyllis Stephens said in an e-mail Thursday that deputies were responding to the call in the town of Wendell, which is just east of Raleigh. Stephens said when deputies arrived, shots were fired. Sources say the Sheriff's deputy was hit by shrapnel, but was wearing a bullet proof vest.

Twenty-six-year-old Deputy Jeff Martin and 56-year-old Mark Brandon Zareski were transported to WakeMed in Raleigh. She said Martin was expected to be released from the hospital overnight, while Zareski was undergoing surgery Thursday night.

A third person, identified as 28-year-old Diane Zareski, was also taken to the hospital. It was not clear why she was transported, and her relationship to Mark Zareski wasn't available.
