Butter the cat is now home with its owner--thanks to generous donations that paid for the feline's care.
The cat was forced to stay at a Pender County veterinary hospital until $700 was paid for the cat's care.
WECT-TV reported that the owners took their cat to Burnett Veterinary Hospital in Burgaw last week for an emergency urinary tract procedure. Cat owner Rhonda Blackburn signed a promise to pay when she came to claim her pet named Butter.
Veterinarian Cynthia Burnett told Blackburn the bill could be between $500 and $700. The total came to $690.
Blackburn tried to pick up Butter with a $200 payment, but the hospital refused to release him.
The veterinarian says it's something that happens three or four times a week. Burnett says her small business has had more than $30,000 in unpaid bills this year.
After the story aired, generous members of the community donated the money to pay for Butter's vet bill.
