School Goofed; Congressmen Blame Federal Overreach

North Carolina school officials say a teacher's mistake launched the tale of a 4-year-old told to eat a school lunch in place of the meal her family packed for her.

Hoke County Schools Assistant Superintendent Bob Barnes said Thursday the girl in an elementary school's pre-kindergarten program should have been handed a carton of milk to round out the turkey-and-cheese sandwich and banana she brought from home. Instead, the teacher erred by telling the tyke to get a cafeteria lunch.

Two North Carolina lawmakers asked the Obama administration to investigate what they called government meddling.

A spokesman for Republican Rep. Renee Ellmers says she and Democratic U.S. Rep. Larry Kissell were outraged by reports on web sites and talk shows of requiring a meal of chicken nuggets.
