Same-Sex Marriage Supporters Celebrate With Rally In Greenville

Some supporters of same-sex marriage in the east celebrated 2 significant supreme court rulings at a marriage equality rally Wednesday night at the Pitt County Courthouse, .

A supreme court ruling struck down a provision of the defense of marriage act, which kept same sex married couples from receiving the same tax, health, and pension benefits as heterosexual married couples. Another ruling Wednesday ruled proposition 8, which banned same sex marriages in California, as unconstitutional.

We spoke with Thomas Passwater at the rally in Greenville who described how he reacted when he heard the news.

"I just hopped up at my desk and ran over to a colleague, and we met halfway down the aisle and started doing our little happy dances and calmly walked back to our desks. And I was just crying and celebrating all day long and it was just amazing," said Passwater.

There were no protesters at the rally, but we spoke Stephen Cooper in Greenville, who says he is opposed to the rulings. He says he doesn't approve, but it's something he'll learn to live with.
