SMU Fires Matt Doherty, Former UNC Coach

SMU has fired men's basketball coach Matt Doherty after six seasons.

The Mustangs announced Doherty's dismissal Tuesday. Doherty went 13-19 this year and 80-109 in six years with SMU.

Doherty is a former national coach of the year at North Carolina. He coached the Tar Heels for three years until he was pressured to resign in April 2003. He coached Florida Atlantic for one year before SMU hired him in April 2006.

Doherty was a splashy hire for a program known largely as a basketball backwater. The Mustangs have not made the NCAA tournament since 1993, and the school elected to make a change before its jump to the Big East in 2013.

SMU ended this season Wednesday with a 74-56 loss to Marshall in the Conference USA tournament.

Let's look at this objectively... He did a good job at Notre Dame... Couldn't handle the pressure at UNC ... and SMU doesn't exactly have a history of basketball excellence. He had no real show to succeed there. Given the lessons learned and the chance to win... he should do well somewhere else

UNC hired him. Gave him a chance. And then fired him when he could not do the job. SMU hired him, Gave him a chance. And then fired him when he could not do the job. That's not the Carolina Way. That's the American Way. BTW. Name a school in Greenville, Raleigh, or Durham that has not fired coaches who did not produce desired results.

He was a good player, but the money-givers to colleges will not stand for losing seasons for long.

No doubt, remember how the Tarholes treated him, gave him some hush money and threw him under the bus!
