North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper says people should be more vigilant than ever in screening calls from phony debt collectors.
Cooper says dozens have called his office to report calls from scammers posing as debt collectors. The calls are described as harassing and intimidating.
The scammers have already obtained some personal information prior to calling, and they use that to trick people into paying off a non-existent debt.
The state advises people to never share personal information with someone they do not know, no matter how convincing the person sounds.
