Rules Proposed For Unmanned Aircraft In NC

Some North Carolina legislators believe detailed rules about who can fly unmanned aircraft are needed to balance privacy concerns with the aircraft's potential benefits for law enforcement and private industry.

A House study panel finalized Wednesday their recommendations to the full General Assembly on the emerging use of drones.

The federal government essentially bars their commercial use right now, but that's likely to change soon. Unmanned aircraft systems are being tested across the country, including in North Carolina.

The committee wants to make it unlawful for anyone to conduct surveillance of a person or the person's house using the aircraft without the person's consent. House members also proposed a licensing system for operating the aircraft once federal regulators authorize commercial flights.
