Police Use Stun Gun On Man In NC Brawl

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) -- A man is in critical condition after Fayetteville police used a stun gun on him during a brawl at a bus station.

Police say they tried to arrest the man Wednesday for repeatedly making bogus 911 calls from pay phones at the bus station, but that he fought about six officers.

Sgt. Gary Womble says officers used a stun gun on the man, but it appeared to have little effect and he continued to fight.

The man was eventually subdued and taken to a local hospital. His name is being withheld until his family is notified.

The department temporarily stopped using stun guns after the August death of 56-year-old Michael Wade Evans, who collapsed after being jolted in a scuffle with police.

Their use resumed after testing by the manufacturer.

Real guns and real bullets should be used on individuals as hard headed as this fool. Choot em !

I usually look for every oppurnity to be overly critical of the police. To second judge their jack-booted tactics and call them a bunch of thugs hiding behind a badge and a gun. Sadly, I cannot do that in this case. Can't really fault them honestly. Guy was breaking the law, they apparently tried to get him to stop peacefully and the man became violent and they tried to use the least amount of force possible at first. Seems like it went pretty much by the book, sorry the guy got hurt though but I don't blame the officers for doing their job in a reasonable manner.

What a biased and non-true report. The man is hurt from the PPCT not the stun gun. Next time shoot him. That'll end the debate. When an officer says stop. STOP

Stun guns have killed people for years. If you have a weak heart or other medical conditions, the jolt will do you harm or kill you. They are a weapon that can kill. Don't believe the bull that they are not deadly force.

Ralph is correct. I don't have exact figures, but as of a year or 2 ago something like 70 people have been killed by stun guns. That's why many states classify them as a "less lethal" weapon, rather than "non lethal". Not sure how NC classifies them.

NC passed a law a few weeks ago that classifies stun guns as deadly weapons only if being used by someone other than the police.

So do the guns that they carry. Is one a better option over the other? What are they supposed to do in a siutaion like this? I think it was a job well done.

So if you've got a heart condition or a weak constitution, I'd suggest you comply when the police tell you to put your hands behind your head. Otherwise, you might die from a tazer shot. I'm not gonna cry for you, either. lol

Well lets say this, first of all it's a taser and not a stun gun. Let's get that straight, and I have been through taser training and the instructor has a heart condition but still went through the "jolt" without harm. Most people that have died from a use of a taser is because there was an underlying problem such as drug usage, which is probally the case in all deaths with this. Yes tere are facts to back that up but the liberal media doesn't report that, doesn't make interesting news.

Lesson here folks....when they tell you to stop, STOP. Don't make bogus 911 phone calls; people who really need 911 need open lines....

What difference does it make?? Who cares how the injury or injuries were caused? He deserves whatever he received just for not respecting our laws and law officers...good for those six officers!

Are you saying that it was okay for this person to get beaten up by six law officers? What if this man had some kind of mental problem and wasn't comprehending the command? One more question, how would you like for six individuals to put you in the hospital clinging for your life? Just asking.

I agree with Purple Haze! The man had enough "sense" to make false 911 calls, enough sense to dial 911 on a phone!! I am in the mental health field, and too many people get the "insanity" label that are not mental or insane. Simply the man knew he was in trouble so he fought the police, and if he did nothing wrong he had no reason to fight them. Maybe you need your brain checked......

"Beaten up" by 6 officers? How about "taken down" by the keepers of the peace? When people get out of control, it's the job of LEOs to get people under control...to quell the disturbance. Once they see that a civil soulution isn't working, using force is the only option. Tazers usually get the job done without risking LEOs bodily harm. If ANYONE resists the police or disobeys a direct order, they SHOULD get "beaten up" by 6 (or more) policemen. If he had mental problems, he should have been in an asylum.

"If ANYONE resists the police or disobeys a direct order, they SHOULD get "beaten up" by 6 (or more) policemen." What a stupid comment! Obviously the " to protect and serve " part of law enforcement isn't something you give a lot of thought. Excessive force? Possibly. If six officers couldn't get him under control, maybe more time at the gym and less at Duncan Donuts would solve the problem !
