Police Chief: Pre-DNC March Is Mostly Uneventful

The police chief says a protest march ahead of the Democratic National Convention has gone smoothly.

Charlotte Police Chief Rodney Monroe estimates that about 800 demonstrators turned out for the March on Wall Street South. The march's general purpose was to decry corporate greed, but it drew people demonstrating for a variety of causes.

Monroe said that officers monitoring the monitoring the march arrested one person for intoxication, though it wasn't immediately clear whether it was a protester or spectator.

Generally, though, Monroe says there haven't been problems with the marchers. He spoke to a reporter while the march was still in progress.

The turnout was a fraction of the thousands that organizers expected for what had been planned as the week's biggest protest.
