Pickle, Acorn Drops Among NC New Year's Versions Of Times Square

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- North Carolina residents are welcoming Baby New Year by dropping a pickle, an acorn and a flea at his feet.

Celebrations planned for Saturday night across the state include several unlikely objects that are "dropped" as midnight arrives, in local variations on the famous Times Square ball.

Eastover's got a 30-pound flea made of fabric and wood. Fayetteville has a giant dogwood bloom. Brasstown has a live opossum lowered to the ground, despite objections this year from animal rights activists.

The Mt. Olive Pickle Company is streaming its pickle drop live on the company website for people who can't make it to the Wayne County town.

And in Raleigh, organizers say the steel-and-copper acorn damaged by a tornado in April will be ready to descend at midnight.
