Perdue Takes Aim At Childhood Hunger

Gov. Beverly Perdue is taking aim at childhood hunger in North Carolina by promoting a public-private partnership geared toward increasing participation in meals programs.

Perdue will join Share Our Strength founder Bill Shore in Durham on Tuesday to announce the No Kid Hungry North Carolina program. The goal is to increase participation in feeding programs by launching a pilot effort in 27 schools.

Right now, less than half the 640,000 children who get a free or reduced-price school lunch participate in the school breakfast program.

Greater participation in the federal school breakfast and summer meals programs could not only feed more children but could bring around $27 million in additional federal funds to the state.
