North Carolina lawmakers could let police and prosecutors wipe their names and addresses off city or county websites listing tax records.
WRAL reports that members of a state House committee on Thursday stripped language out of legislation to amend contracting law and replaced it with the new proposal. The bill would allow law officers, district attorneys and assistant district attorneys to seek the removal of their names, addresses and phone numbers from their online tax records.
Republican Rep. Chris Malone of Wake County said the measure was in response to an incident in which the father of a local assistant district attorney was kidnapped by alleged gang members. Malone says he often hears from police officers who complain that people they've arrested show up at their door.
