North Carolina Family Hopes For Release Of Man In Georgia Prison

A judge's decision is giving hope to a North Carolina woman who wants her husband to be released from a Georgia prison, where he's serving a life sentence for murder.

Anita McNeil moved back to Wilson, N.C., after her husband, John, was convicted. In December 2005, John McNeil shot and killed a man who was threatening him outside his house. He claimed he shot the man in self-defense under Georgia's so-called stand your ground law, which allows people to use deadly force in certain instances when they are threatened.

Last month, a Georgia judge ruled in favor of releasing McNeil. The Georgia attorney general must decide whether to appeal.

Anita McNeil is suffering from advanced stage breast cancer. She hopes to see her husband soon outside the prison walls.
