New Bern Civil War Cannon Returned To State

A Confederate cannon seized during the Battle of New Bern is back in North Carolina in time for the 150th anniversary of the skirmish.

Amherst College in Massachusetts has loaned the cannon to the N.C. Museum of History in Raleigh, which will display it until June 2015.

On Wednesday, members of a re-enactment group will be at the museum, dressed in uniform and available to talk with visitors. The re-enactors are part of the Charlotte Artillery, Company C, 10th N.C. State Troops, Reactivated.

The cannon was issued to that company at the start of the Civil War. The company was sent to New Bern for the battle on March 14, 1862. The Union gave the cannon to the 21st Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, which gave it to Amherst.

If it belonged to NC why is it in Mass.???? Donate it and write it off your bottom line -------- the very reason I say the "Mason-Dixon" line is at the north side of the bridge in Roanoke Rapids. -- sometimes I wonder if that is a leeeetle toooo far North.

The gun is origianlly a US gun, seized by the Confederates, later recaptured by the Union at New Bern, now back in NC for a few years.

Just cause R.E. Lee surrendered, that don't mean the rest of us did. The darn Yankees stole our coffee supply. We're restocked now.

"To the Victor go the spoils". If you don't believe that, visit any military museum in the country.

Always shooting their mouths off. I say, use this 150th anniversary as a cover for a surprise attack!
