New Cars Won't Need Emissions Tests In 2014

The owners of new vehicles no longer will have to get emissions tests starting in 2014.

The Charlotte Observer reported Gov. Beverly Perdue has signed into law a bill that exempts vehicles three years old and newer from annual checks designed to fight air pollution.

Vehicles still must be checked every year for headlights, tires, wipers and some other parts.

The tests had been required in 48 of the state's 100 counties.

Drivers pay $13.60 for the safety test. The emissions test is an extra $16.40.

There have been attempts to end vehicle inspections in North Carolina, but repair shops and garage owners have opposed that.
