NC Slated To Open New $155 Million Prison Hospital

North Carolina prison officials are preparing to open a new $155 prison hospital and mental health unit at Central Prison in Raleigh, a spacious five-story building with enough beds for 336 patients.
It will replace a hot, cramped and crumbling medical wing dating to the 1960s that will be bulldozed after the new facility opens next month.
Currently, inmates needing inpatient care are often sent out to community hospitals. They must be chained to their beds and accompanied by correctional officers, leading to staff overtime and transportation costs.
The new hospital includes such state-of-the art features as a CT scanner, surgical suites and a unit for providing chemotherapy.
Department of Corrections Chief Operating Officer Jennie Lancaster said the new facility is expected to save taxpayers about $40 million a year.

Well to u out there with such bad comments. My son is in prison for the first time doing way more yrs than it should be. He has a very bad cyst in his mouth and I am grateful that there are doctors that will take care of him. I have no children in school but I pay school taxes yearly. How dare you - just wait until one of your loved ones ends up in prison and is ill - what will u do - u will do nothing because we are not able to do anything - Again how dare you. My son is a great person and made mistakes as I am sure you have in your life. I just pray that u don't have to go through the nightmare I have gone through. I am ashamed about your thoughts. OMG

155 million to prisoners who don't have to pay for their health care. Something is wrong! Make them work or do like 3rd world countries do and let the family or relatives pay for their expense, or they can just fend for theirselves. Why not go to prison? 3 meals a day... FREE... a place that is heated and cooled ........ FREE.... A place to sleep...... FREE. When their are people that have worked and done RIGHT all of their lives doing WITHOUT -------- BUT heck let us look after the prisoners....... Something is just wrong, and we pay for it.

So much wrong in this topic...why do prisoners not deserve humane conditions and a medical facility? Not every criminal is a mass-murdering, child-raping, psycopath. Lots of people are probably in for minor drug charges that have just continued to pile up, likely lots of "intent" to traffic marijuana cases, some simple assaults, etc. Granted, they shouldn't stay at 5 star resorts, but they need some manner of living conditions and prisons are not cheap to build or maintain. If you don't want this what you would you rather have? Them out on the streets? It's also important to note the mental health unit, lots of people have real problems with the chemestry in their brains, and if this facility can help them truly recover through drugs and therapy I don't see what's not to support.

Why because I actually understand that prisoners are people and not all mass-murdering, emotionless, psychopaths? And I ask again, what would you have people do who have mental heath diseases who are in prison? Let them just fester and get worse, or try to actually do what, you know, what prisons are actually intended to do; rehabilitate prisoners. God forbid we actually help people who need help instead of ignoring the problem and letting them get worse. You're actually the type of scum that should be thrown in jail.

It's amazing how "Christian" everyone is when two gay guys want to get married, but they all scatter like cockroaches when you start asking them to actually forgive society's sinners. What these critics should be doing is asking themselves why our justice system doesn't work. More and more people going into prison.. so it's not reducing the problem.

I think this is the craziest thing I have ever heard of...these lowlife criminals, most of whom have never hit a lick of work in their useless lives, get state of the art healthcare while hardworking taxpayers,if they can find a job, can't afford healthcare at all...When are we as voters going to wise up and vote all the greedy incumbent politicians out of office and turn our country around....I'm sick & tired of paying for the lavish lifestyle of thugs, robbers, rapists & murderers. Our politicians are nothing but parasites who suck every dollar out of the working populace for their own use...And,sadly,its our own fault for voting the same ones back in every election...

McCain Prison Hospital was just closed! Yeah it was old but that doesn't mean it was worthless! guess those jobs were more important to Raleigh than Hoke County.
